It’s challenging to deal with a pest infestation in your home. If that ever happens to you, pest extermination can be the only solution.

So, to prevent that from happening, it is essential to be proactive. It’s a lot easier and much cheaper to prevent a pest infestation from occurring. Plus, preventing pest infestation can be a straightforward process.

Meaning, it does not have to be complicated to keep pests and vermin at bay. With that said, here are six simple home cleaning hacks that you can do to help prevent pest infestations.

1. Store your food properly

Proper food storage is an excellent way not to attract pests and vermins into your home.

The reason pests are most likely entering your home is that they can detect food somewhere inside. Therefore, you want your food items to be stored properly so that it doesn’t attract pests.

At Maid Sailors Maid Service Chicago, we recommend removing the food items from their original packaging. And then place them in a sturdier container.

Bugs and pests can quickly get into most of the packaging that your food comes in, so putting them in airtight containers can help.

2. Throw overnight trash

The waste that you produce is also a magnet for pests. That said, you should be mindful of the trash and wastes that you make.

Aside from making sure that any trash you create is thrown in the bin, it would help if you also remembered always to throw away your overnight trash. As much as possible, you want to avoid leaving a full trash can overnight because it can attract pests. Plus, whatever smells, or substances can linger more inside your trash bin when it’s left overnight.

If you do end up with overnight trash in your trash bin, make sure that you should also wash the trash bin and let it dry aside from throwing out the garbage.

3. Keep the toilet clean and dry

When you think about pest control and preventing an infestation, you usually do not think about the bathroom. What you do not know is that keeping the bathroom clean and dry is critical.

Although you can expect that the bathroom can get quite wet, it is still good to keep everything clean and dry. From the toilets to the shower curtains, everything should be dry when not in use.

If you have a well-organized and structured bathroom, it can help prevent pest infestation.

One practice that you might not be doing, and many households are not, would be the act of adding a trash bag into their bathroom trash can. This simple addition into your bathroom can make it easier for you to get rid of the trash without any debris. As such, you will not be attracting pests.

4. Avoid keeping cut fruits and vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are an excellent magnet for flies and all sorts of insects that you do not want in your home. If you have overripe fruits or vegetables, they will attract insects even more than your usual.

That’s why you should avoid keeping overripe produce out in the open.

You should also avoid cutting open fruits or vegetables and leaving them out in the open because it also attracts pests. Store them in an airtight container before placing them in a fridge. That way, they last longer if you are not going to be using them, and they will not attract pests.

5. Clean kitchen countertops

The kitchen is where you prepare food which you already know attracts pests, so you must keep your kitchen as clean as possible.

A part of the kitchen that you should pay special attention to would be your kitchen countertops. The countertops are where you usually prepare food. So, it’s common to find food debris and other related substances sticking to your counters.

That’s why it’s a good idea to remember to clean your kitchen countertops thoroughly and to disinfect them.

Cleaning kitchen countertops regularly prevent a pest infestation. It also ensures that you prepare food in a sanitized place.

6. Vacuum regularly

Another cleaning habit that you should practice would be regular vacuuming. Regular vacuuming helps with reducing dust and dander from accumulating inside your house. It is imperative to vacuum regularly if you have pets inside the home.

If you keep things clean and organized and vacuum regularly, you can also reduce the likelihood of bed bugs settling in your mattresses and beddings.

Vacuuming can help reduce and remove pests dropping. That’s why it’s critical for pest prevention that you vacuum with regularity.

The tips listed above will show you that the key to preventing a pest infestation is keeping a sanitized and clean home. By maintaining your house’s cleanliness, you prevent pest infestation from happening. It also ensures that you are living a healthier and more sanitized life at home.
