Tips to Resolve Sewer Line Blockage Caused by Tree Roots

Many homeowners, when they notice a blockage and head forward to find out the reason behind it, it’s most commonly the tree roots in sewer line. When left unattended, tree roots can not only cause blockage to sewer pipelines but can eventually damage and break the pipes. This article shares tips related to sewer line issues caused by tree and shrub roots.

How do tree roots invade pipelines?

There’s a common belief among many individuals that tree roots break into the sewer pipes. However, this is not the actual reason behind it. The only possible way such roots can get into the pipelines is through cracks and holes. Therefore, by any chance, if the sewer lines of any home carry a crack and holes, it will have a probability of inviting tree roots.

Roots gravitate towards oxygen and moisture, and sewer lines are rich with both as it carries moisture. Depending on the size of the tree, its permanent or hair roots can reach up to 100 feet below the ground, and in some cases, it can go even further.

Homeowners should make sure that after installing the sewer lines, it’s better to avoid that particular area for tree plantation. If trees are planted above the pipelines, the root balls surround the pipeline beneath when they start to grow. With time passing by, the pressure from the root balls keeps increasing gradually, and at a certain point in time, it breaks the pipes.

However, it’s not the roots but the pressure which cracks the pipes, and as a result, the tree roots start growing in. In areas where the soil is more prone to contraction and expansion, the chances of getting tree roots in a sewer line in a bit higher.

Getting the roots out of a sewer line

The best way one could keep their pipes safe from roots is to ensure that there aren’t any cracks or holes in them. However, this can only be done at the time of installation, but it’s not even possible to see the pipes once buried. Mentioned below are three tips one could consider to get rid of tree roots from pipelines.

  •   Cutting down the roots

Individuals can use a sewer machine that is designed to cut the roots inside sewer pipes. Such machines carry a root-cutting attachment at the tip of a cable. The cable is penetrated through the pipes while the blades rotate and cut the roots.

Once done, one should flush the pipe properly to remove the debris from inside. This is an effective option; however, one should keep in mind that there’s already a hole in the pipes, leading to repeated growth of roots inside.

  •   Making use of chemicals

There are certain chemicals or even rock salts which help kill roots. However, this technique can lead to corrosion and eventually weaken the pipes. Therefore, seeking professional help to perform such tasks is a wise idea. It’s a temporary fix that is only applicable for getting rid of smaller roots.

  •   Replacing the pipe

The best thing one could do to get rid of tree roots in the sewer lines is by replacing and installing new pipes. This will ensure that there aren’t holes or cracks which can lead to the growth of roots and cause blockage. One could try the temporary solutions mentioned above, but once those tricks fail to give results, replacing the pipes is the only option left.

Conclusion

Sewer lines play a vital role in the passage of water for any household, and a blockage in the same can lead to loads of hassle. Individuals who suspect roots in pipes should consider seeking a professional plumbing service provider who can help resolve the issue at a justified cost and at the earliest.
